Pleased to announce partnership with Save Babies Through Screening Foundation

Friday, January 20th, 2012

The mission of the Save Babies Through Screening Foundation is to improve the lives of children and their families, by working to prevent disabilities and death resulting from disorders detectable through newborn screening tests.

The Foundation’s goal is to see that every baby born in the United States is screened successfully, effectively, and comprehensively.

Save Babies Through Screening Foundation educates parents, pediatric healthcare providers, and policy makers about available comprehensive newborn screening, the importance of obtaining positive or other test results requiring follow-up actions within 5 days of birth, and the importance of prompt confirmatory testing and treatment/management when needed.

WSAID is very pleased to announce this partnership. We are sure this collaboration will make a significant and positive impact in the lives of many babies and families.   Please visit the foundation’s website for more information on newborn screening:

Saving Haiti: Part 2

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Within a week after the earthquake, WSAID put together a team of very dedicated people and started working on a plan. We met on a regular basis and everybody contributed to our meetings in one way or another. Our goal was, and continues to be, to reach the people of Haiti before the rainy season and the hurricanes start.  We knew once this time came, all their problems were going to increase dramatically. We only have a few months left now until that dreaded season. We have used every single form of communication known to man, including those highly technological, emails, blackberries, laptops, and conference calls along with the usual word-of-mouth and even direct mail. We have worked day and night to get draft drawings and texts ready so we can explain to the world what we are trying to accomplish.

It has been exactly two months after the earthquake.  It seems like an eternity as I watch the rain outside my window and think of how fast the rainy season approaches.  Yesterday, I took my daughter for a walk around our neighborhood. One of the neighbors has two empty pots with a little bit of dirt left inside. As we were pulled by our very determined basset hound Rosco around, we stopped to look at the pots. Adrianna said: “look mommy…the fish are back!!!”   What my daughter saw as “little fish” were actually mosquito larvae and we watched them come up for air in the pots and wiggle around. I explained to Adrianna what mosquito larvae look like and why it is important not to help them “swim” before emptying the pots… again. We have been doing this for the last two weeks. They are only a few larvae growing but in a few weeks, we have emptied them at least three times and the larvae seem to come from nowhere. I can not imagine how many mosquitoes will breed in Haiti this time with all the water and all the possible new habitats they will encounter.
