Forum/symposium on Tropical Diseases in Santa Marta, Colombia July 27-28,2011

WSAID, Dr. Juan Dib scientific director of Tropical Health Foundation in Colombia and Dr. Daniel Echeverri from the Hospital Universitario del Valle  have joined efforts to organize an open forum/symposium on tropical diseases including those usually neglected.  This event hopes to contribute to the dissemination of tropical disease research, laboratory and clinical methods, technologies and protocols to identify, diagnose and treat tropical diseases. Open to health care and research professionals.

Protagonist Insects: Education through art in Jacksonville, FL June 25-November 25,2011

WSAID, The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) in Jacksonville and ASOCOL are sharing their efforts and their insterest in educating the public to bring an exhibit on mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit. The exhibit will show mosquitoes, their life cycle, habitats and the diseases they transmit in Florida through amazing photographs and close-ups provided by Alejandro Valencia-Tobón and Jean Claude Ardila. Simultaneous with the exhibit, a clay modelling workshop will educate children and their families on the characteristics and life cycle of these insects. The exhibit will open to the public on June 25 and will continue through November.

Latin American Newborn Screening Symposium in Cali, Colombia, November 1-3,2011   

The purpose of this symposium is to create awareness about the importance of screening newborns for metabolic, endocrine, genetic and infectious diseases in order to promote screening. Participants will be pediatricians, clinic personnel, laboratory directors and medical technologists from Latin America.

Newborn screening symposium in Guatemala, October 21, 2011

WSAID has joined the Human Genetic Unit at Nuestra Señora del Pilar Hospital

Newborn Screening Laboratory in Colombia

WSAID is working with Astoria Pacific, SDM diagnostics and the Colombian National Institutes of Health to establish a state of the art laboratory able to provide screening for more than 45 disorders in Latin America. This laboratory will contribute to improving the health of newborns in the continent by addition of screening for infectious diseases. With the creation of this laboratory, the newborn screening program in Colombia will be able to provide training in early detection of infectious diseases in newborns.

Colombian Relief Efforts

WSAID-has joined efforts with The Colombian Association of North Florida (ASOCOL),  Tropical Health Foundation, the Secretary or Health in Cordoba and Atlantico and Tampa Cargo to bring relief for families affected by the 2010 floods in Colombia. We have collected 1.5 tons of food, clothes, supplies and basic necessities for families affected by the flood.

The objective of this project is to improve the health and living conditions of children and adults in the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Newborn Screening Laboratory in other countries in Latinoamerica

WSAID continues to work with Astoria Pacific in a combined effort to establish newborn screening laboratories in Haiti, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to provide screening for metabolic, endocrine and infectious diseases for newborns and provide early diagnosis.
